Interview
Q 5:  Who was naming all those rocks on Mars?

A 5:
Everybody, and primarily the scientists. Early on, one of the first names was "Yogi," and it turns out the rock actually looks like a bear profile in the upper left-hand corner of the rock as you see it from the Lander. And "Barnacle Bill" was number two, and that's the first rock we got right up to, and it was kind of like a barnacle in texture. After that, there was no formal process in place, so people would suggest names by writing the names on post-it notes and placing them onto this very large poster which took up most of this conference room. There was an approval process, where someone was named the official rock naming czar, and they would reject any personal names of people, and the names would have to be generic and not commercial. Naming the rocks turned out to be very useful, because it's much more intuitive to refer to a named rock than a numbered rock.
